MOON GOOSE COLONY

10 april 2011

- ongoing

Homo sapiens and anser lunaris, science and dream visions, Earth and Moon. In search of hidden worlds, beyond the possibilities and limitations of the phenomenal, perceptible world, Moon Goose Colony is the door that opens onto forms of intersection and deep connection between different living species, between real and fantastic experiences, planets teeming with life to be preserved, their satellites with biological sub-layers to be reinvented

In spring 2011, a small colony of moon geese has undertaken its path to life under the influence of the first spring crescent moon, the Egg Moon. Since then, Agnes Meyer-Brandis is a mother to them and a celestial guide, leading them on an odyssey outside of time and terrestrial space, back through the history of evolution, to the absolute root of every phylogenetic tree. The artist lived and worked with the geese, proceeding with astronautical training, cognitive and behavioural tests, astronomical observations and comparative studies. Pollinaria was and continues to be the site of their relationship and training, a place of parallel research and inspiration, a spaceport and launch-pad to their final destination: the Moon

Moon Goose Colony is founded on the scientific basis of the ideas of Konrad Lorenz and his studies in animal behaviour, particularly imprinting. It is also inspired by the science fiction of a seventeenth-century novel, The Man in the Moone by Francis Godwin, in which the author describes the phenomenon of the lack of gravity long before Newton's theories. The story's protagonist flies to the moon on a chariot drawn by a colony of geese, migrating yearly from Earth to Moon. The project also grew out of research undertaken by Agnes Meyer-Brandis in Siberia in 2008, during a total eclipse of the Sun: The Moon Goose Experimen
t | a bio-poetic investigation. In this work, she organised a space expedition from a sandy island of the River Ob and observed the effects of the eclipse on the behaviour of moon geese

The project is currently being further developed in partnership with The Arts Catalyst. In Moon Goose Analogue: Lunar Migration Bird Facility, the moon geese are continuing their astronaut training at Pollinaria in an analogue that simulates the conditions of the moon surface. This habitat is connected to a travelling, remote control room - first installed in Liverpool (FACT), later in Newcastle upon Tyne (Great North Museum) - from which it is possible to communicate with the geese and follow their activities. The work has recently received an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica 2012 (Hybrid Art category)

Agnes Meyer-Brandis, lives and works in Berlin, studied mineralogy for a year, then transferred to the Art Academy in Maastricht, the Dusseldorf Art Academy and the Cologne Media Art Academy. She comes from a background of both sculpture and new media art. Her work, exhibited worldwide, is at the experimental edge of art and science, exploring the zone between fact and fiction. Agnes Meyer-Brandis is the founder of the Forschungsfloss FFUR / Research Raft for Subterranean Reefology, a small institute whose chief aim is to explore and confirm subterranean phenomena and unknown life forms. Lately, her focus of investigation has moved into higher altitudes and their connected realities. In this realm, she conducted an artistic experiment in weightlessness in co-operation with the German Space Agency DLR
